CGA Revisions in Detail

- 4/8/2009
Chantilly, VA - The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) has released a revised publication: CGA V-9, Compressed Gas Association Standard for Compressed Gas Cylinder Valves. This standard covers general cylinder valve design, application and selection, design qualification, required markings and performance requirements such as operating temperature limits, pressure ranges, operating torque limits and flow capabilities.

“This standard is vital for manufacturers and users of compressed gas cylinders,” states Roger Smith, technical director, CGA. “Many significant changes occurred to ensure the safety of our industry moving forward, and it’s an important addition to the library of valve manufacturers and gas manufacturers and users alike.”

CGA V-9, Compressed Gas Association Standard for Compressed Gas Cylinder Valves provides testing and maintenance requirements. Additionally, required markings for medical valves testing requirements have been modified and strengthened to provide clear guidance to the manufacturers and testers of cylinder valves. The scope of the document clearly states those valves which are covered by the document and defines how valves are designed, qualified and tested. Appendices include instructions for providing data to determine valve selection, information on using valves correctly and a performance standard for valve protection. The standard also provides a thorough listing of valve types, their applications and limitations along with drawings of the different valve types.

This standard does not apply to cylinder valves used with nonrefillable cylinders (such as DOT-39, TC-39M and nonrefillable cylinders manufactured under special permits or permits of equivalent level of safety); cylinder valves used in DOT-2P and DOT-2Q (TC-2P and TC-2Q) cylinders; cylinder valves with an integrated pressure regulator (VIPR); cylinder valves on DOT-4L (TC-4LM) cylinders; cylinder valves in refrigerated liquid service; or cylinder valves on DOT/TC cylinders (tubes) that are horizontally mounted to a chassis or framework for road transportation.

CGA TB-20, Required Markings for Manufacturer Identification on Post-Type Medical Cylinder Valve has also been updated to reflect new valve marking requirements in CGA V-9. This technical bulletin was updated to aid in the identification of the manufacture and date of manufacturing of post-type medical valves.

To purchase an electronic or hard copy of CGA V-9 (or CGA TB-20), please visit www.cganet.com or call Customer Service at (703) 788-2799. The standard is priced at $172 for a hard copy and $129 for an electronic copy.
