Boeing Launches Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft - 7/13/2010
Boeing unveiled its liquid hydrogen-powered Phantom Eye aircraft, an unmanned vehicle that can maintain high altitudes for several days at a time. The Phantom Eye was built for use in surveillance, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance and communications.
Boeing’s aircraft is powered by two 2.3 liter, four cylinder engines that provide 150 horsepower apiece. The Phantom Eye has a 150-foot wingspan and can carry a payload of up to 450 pounds. It can cruise at 170 miles per hour at altitudes up to 65,000 feet for up to four days at a time.
The aircraft will be sent to NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center later this summer for testing.
