BP Responsible For Another Toxic Spill- 6/7/2010While much attention remains focused on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP recently admitted to another chemical spill at its refinery in Texas City, Texas. In a filing with the state’s environmental agency on Friday, BP estimated it released about 17,000 pounds of benzene and 36,000 pounds of nitrogen oxide during a 40-day period in April and May. State law requires that the release of ten pounds or more of benzene and 200 pounds or more of nitrogen oxide during a 24-hour period be reported through the commission’s air emissions database. Benzene is a carcinogen and exposure poses serious health risks. The refinery’s ultracracker unit was offline and BP was trying to repair a compressor at the time of the spill. Other emissions released during the 40-day period included about 189,000 pounds of carbon monoxide and 61,000 pounds of propane.
