Air Force Welds New Skills

U.S. Air Force mechanics at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, are adding basic welding and cutting skills to their repertoires. The goal of the 80-hour training courses is to help students become more proficient in vehicle repair, allowing the airmen to carry out repairs themselves rather than bringing in welding consultants and contractors. Coursework includes instruction in stick welding, TIG welding and plasma cutting among other techniques.

When I was deployed overseas in the U.S. Air Force during Operation Iraqi Freedom, my background in welding let me make repairs myself and teach others to do so as well, improving our efficiency. I think welding training is very helpful in the Air Force and distributors should consider getting involved with training programs at their local air bases.
