A New Use For Oxygen Chambers

- 7/12/2010

A study published in the American Journal of Physiology provides evidence to show that the use of oxygen chambers may help reduce skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays. In the study, scientists at the University of Tokyo, Japan, exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from a fluorescent lamp for prolonged periods, and then placed a test group in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.

During the study, the mice were exposed to UVB rays three times a week for a period of five weeks. Some of the mice were placed in an oxygen chamber for two hours to study the effects of the oxygen on skin damage from UV rays. The study draws on previous research that identifies low oxygen levels as a factor in damage to proteins in skin.

At the completion of the trial, the group of mice placed in the oxygen chamber showed fewer wrinkles and less thickening of the skin than those mice that did not receive oxygen treatment.

The oxygen chamber used for the study contained 90 percent oxygen. The scientists say that the increased level of oxygen in the mice’s blood was the reason for the improved appearance of the skin.
