9,000 Wire Feed Welders Recalled

- 7/16/2010

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of about 9,000 wire feed welders from Star Asia USA, LLC, doing business as (DBA) Titan, of Kent Washington, out of concern for possible burn risks to users. The welder’s torch lacks a cold contactor, resulting in the immediate formation of an electrical arc upon contact with the welding material. The product packaging and manual both state that the welder has a cold contactor.

The model involved in the recall is the Vaper 90 amp flux wire feed welder, model number 41181. The recalled wire feed welder was sold at auto parts stores and tool stores across the nation, including Pep Boys and Auto Zone, between October 2006 and March 2010 for about $170.

The CPSC advises customers to stop using the Star Asia Vaper 90 welder. Customers can contact Star Asia to receive instructions on returning the product at (800) 386-0191, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
