Industrial gas

The term industrial gas refers to a gas that is produced in relatively large quantity by industrial gas companies for use in a variety of industrial manufacturing processes. Industrial gases are produced and supplied in both gas and liquid form and are transported to customers in cylinders, as bulk liquid or as pipeline gases.[1]
Industrial gases are pure elements, molecular compounds or mixtures that are gaseous or vaporous at room temperature and pressure. Industrial gases are used for a variety of applications, depending on the type of gas used. For example, uses of oxygen include welding and cutting, oxidation processes for making chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and treatment of wastewater. [2]
Industrial gases are used in countless forms of manufacturing, ranging from shipyards to packaging and from microchip production to cutting and welding. Some of the most common industrial gases are:
- Air gases such as oxygen (O2), nitrogen (N2) and argon (Ar)
- Rare gases such as helium (He), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe) and neon (Ne)
- Hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O)
- Chlorine (Cl2), hydrogen chloride (HCl) and sulfur dioxide (SO2)
- Acetylene (C2H2), methane (CH4) and propane (C3H8)
Mixtures of these gases and others are also commonly produced for specific applications.[3]
